Introduction

Mayiladuthurai is located on the Poompuhar Road. Poompuhar – Dharmakulam – Kizhaperumpallam is 4 km away if you come via Naganatharkoil. There are two Shiva temples in the town. One is the Ketu site called the Naganathar Temple where the Navagraha Ketu is worshiped. Secondly, this Kailasanathar temple is the place where the Lord showed Vasuki. It is said that the beautiful temple built by the Chola kings over a period of about 1000 years was later restored by the people of the city. The present condition of the temple is very deplorable. The temple is a complex of plants growing without adequate maintenance. Brick ruins are scattered in front of the temple. The walls are damaged by sprouting trees., Nandi and the altar were in a small hall before the Lord, in which it was not known who was the saint who had thrown Nandi out, and the Ganesha under the flagpole facing east behind Nandi was also missing. In the northeast there is only the Navagraha Mandapam and the Navagrahas are missing. Sanders’ condition is still appalling as he looks at the accounts of the temples, not knowing who the tyrant who broke his head was.

Puranic Significance

The asuras and gods together with a dragon named Vasuki, the milkman, tried to get nectar by using liquor around the Meru hill. The gods on the one hand and the monsters on the other pulled. Vasuki’s body became sore as he walked around the mountain. The pain was unbearable, and the poison spat out Then Shiva drinks the alakalam. Vasuki is saddened by this and comes to the world and performs penance in this place. To the east of the temple is a large pond to the south. Lord Kailasanathar blesses in the sanctum sanctorum facing east and Goddess sanctum sanctorum facing south. On both sides of the gate of the sanctum sanctorum are the shrines of Ganesha and Lord Murugan. Mahalakshmi has also been placed inside as there is no security outside. In the sanctum sanctorum are Thenmugan, Mahavishnu, Brahman and Durga. According to Lakshminarayan, there are shrines in the south-west. “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K. Vijayan, these are extracted from his posts”.
