Puranic Significance

About 75 years ago, a devoted Shiva follower named Balagurusamy, who lived in this region, undertook pilgrimages to several sacred places such as Kashi and Rameswaram. As a divine blessing from those pilgrimages, he was blessed with a male child, whom he named Balabhishekan and raised with great care and devotion.

His son, who held Shiva devotion as his very life, unfortunately passed away. Stricken with grief, Balagurusamy became disheartened and began to doubt the existence of God. In despair, he decided to discard all the pooja items from his house into the nearby river.

That night, he had a dream. In it, he saw a sage seated on the hill located to the west of the village—the same hill where the present temple stands. Near the sage, he saw his son lying down. Rushing to the hill the next day, he called out to his son, who refused to come back with him.

The sage then spoke, saying, “Let him remain with me and serve me here. You will be blessed with another son.” When Balagurusamy asked the sage who he was, the sage vanished and appeared instead as Lord Shiva along with Goddess Parvati. Moreover, they appeared in a form of Jyoti on the southwestern side of the hill.

At the very spot where Lord Shiva and Parvati revealed themselves, he built the present-day temple. It is believed that, through Shiva’s grace, he was later blessed with five sons.
